Objects have their own way of being. Hojicha does not belong to the teacup. Tobacco is smoke in the form of an object. Scent comes from change, not from keeping still.
On matter
Scent has no shape. Scent has no borders. And still it stops at one point, one moment, one person. Scent comes before words.
On smell
Tea roasted to dryness. The water gone, the freshness gone. What remains is smoke, wood, a scent with no clear time.

The one who smells stands outside. The scent belongs to the object, not to the person. As before a painting: the painting does not belong to us.
