A quiet lens on 19th-century Paris

Hippolyte Blancard (1843.1924) was a French pharmacist and amateur photographer best known for his meticulous documentation of everyday life in late 19th-century Paris. Working during a time of immense transformation in the city.marked by modernization, industrial expansion, and urban redesign.Blancard used photography not for spectacle, but for quiet observation. His images captured bridges under construction, city squares, street scenes, and moments of daily labor, creating an invaluable record of a rapidly changing society.

Blancard often used the platinum print process, a photographic technique prized for its rich tonal range, matte surface, and exceptional archival stability. Unlike silver-based prints, platinum prints do not fade over time, and their subtle gray-black tones convey depth and atmosphere that complemented Blancard’s documentary style.
