Where reading becomes authorship.

Since 2019, Mexican artist Iñaki Bonillas has been developing Marginalia , a long-term project centered on the handwritten notes, marks, and annotations left in the margins of books once owned by his grandfather, J.R. Plaza. An avid reader, Plaza filled his personal library with underlines, questions, exclamations, and commentary.turning reading into an ongoing conversation with the text.

Bonillas collects, isolates, and recontextualizes these marginalia, transforming them into standalone visual and conceptual elements. Stripped from the printed text they once accompanied, the notes gain new weight.as poetic fragments, philosophical musings, or glimpses into a private mind at work. In doing so, Marginalia examines how we interact with knowledge not just by absorbing it, but by responding to it, editing it, and reshaping it.

Through this series, Bonillas invites us to reconsider the act of reading as something creative and performative. The margin, often overlooked, becomes the main subject. The reader becomes a kind of author. And the book becomes a site of quiet dialogue across time.between text, memory, and interpretation.
