Sissel Tolaas. FEAR 21 (2005)

The smell of fear. a map of human emotion.

In her project FEAR 21 , Norwegian artist and smell researcher Sissel Tolaas created one of the most daring and provocative works in the field of olfactory art. Premiered in 2005 in Berlin, the project was based on a scientific and artistic investigation of sweat samples from 21 men experiencing intense fear.each from different countries and socio-cultural backgrounds. Tolaas collected their sweat, analyzed the molecular composition of the odors, and then reproduced these smells inside an exhibition space using advanced scent technology.

Instead of depicting fear through images or sound, FEAR 21 forced viewers to confront the visceral, invisible reality of panic, stress, and trauma. through the raw and intimate medium of scent. There were no labels, no explanations; visitors simply entered a closed space and experienced fear physically, through their own sensory perception.

The project raises profound questions about the boundaries between science and art, the personal and the collective, emotion and biology. With FEAR 21 , Tolaas didn’t just create an artwork.she created an emotional environment , where smell becomes the silent language of human fear .
